DESCRIPTION:COHI began in the 1990s in the Episcopal Diocese of Texas, founded by the Rev. Helen Appelberg, Assistant Director of Pastoral Care at St. Luke’s Hospital in Houston, Texas. It was created with the bold belief that laypeople—teachers, caregivers, accountants, students, retirees—can be equipped to offer meaningful spiritual care. It has since grown into an ecumenical ministry, now found across the country and still widely embraced by Episcopal dioceses, including our own Diocese of West Texas.\nAt its heart, Community of Hope is grounded in Benedictine spirituality and a Rule of Life that cultivates:\n\nCompassionate presence\nDeep listening\nSpiritual practices\nOngoing formation and support\n\nRooted in the Episcopal tradition, this program equips everyday people—teachers, caregivers, engineers, artists, and you—with the tools for meaningful ministry.\nTopics include:\n\nDeep listening\nGrief and loss\nFamily systems\nCaregiver wellness\n\nAfter the training, participants discern where or if they’re called to serve—whether in homes, congregations, hospitals, nursing homes or if at all – and gather regularly in a Circle of Care for mutual support and spiritual growth.\nIf you’re curious about what God might be inviting you into—if you feel a nudge toward compassion, presence, and purpose—this may be your next step.\n
